Curtis Bumpy

Curtis Bumpy plays rare groove selections from your favorite uncle’s funky old vinyl collection — all that’s missing is the scratchy sound of the needle in the groove.

Old friends of mine from waaaay back in the day, including Keith McArthur (bass, Spearhead, Will Bernard, etc.), Jan Jackson (drums, Beth Custer, Will Bernard, etc.), David Agretelis (sax, Robert Palmer, Will Bernard, etc.), David James (guitar/vocals, Afro-Funk Experience, Beth Custer, etc.), Josh Jones (percussion, Josh Jones Latin Jazz Ensemble, Hieroglyphics Ensemble, etc. etc.), Jordan Glasgow (keys, Five Point Plan, Distraction Fit), and Damon Wood (guitar, Engine 88, Smoking Section — oh wait, that’s me). Will Bernard is not currently a regular member of this group. Curtis Bumpy is a working name, which will most likely become permanent.

Curtis Bumpy takes many forms and has many faces, but has a single purpose: to cook up the greasiest, slinkiest, stankifunkiest grooves on the globe. Sizzling in the pan is a thick base of funk and sub-classic R&B, seasoned with the rich flavors of jazz and salsa, topped off with hints of emocore and trip-hop and a sprinkling of whatever Curtis has been riding with that week.

The list of Curtis Bumpy alumni grows with each session, and to date includes the above Bay Area luminaries, plus Matt Willis, Eric Garland, Joshi Marshall, Paige Weber, David James, Omega Brooks and Latrice Barnett. You just never know who will show up to play.
