90’s Shout Out for Engine 88

Always nice to see that Engine isn’t completely forgotten. Nice mention in SFGate this week in Best Bay Area Bands from the 90s. We’re on page 22, rubbing shoulders with some good company. A nice honor to be included, and as always with lists like this there are criminally-absent bands I can think of like the Mo’fessionals, Overwhelming Colorfast, Van Gogh’s Daughter, the Sneetches, and on and on. Still, it’s fun to page through. http://blog.sfgate.com/loaded/2012/05/21/1990s/

Fun at the Pro Jam

I have not been to more than a couple of open mic/blues jam type affairs, but have wanted to find a good scenario with a high level of musicianship without a lot of attitude. The Pro Jam run by Timm Walker at Vinnie’s Bar & Grill in Concord, CA seems to fit that bill pretty well, and the other night they had a super cool special guest: Tommy Castro. I was fortunate enough to land a slot late in the evening just when Tommy returned to the stage to close out the night, and as if I wasn’t already lucky enough, they picked Sex Machine. Doesn’t get a whole lot more fun than this for me. Tommy Castro on guitar and vocals, Timm Walker on bass, Byron Cage (of Tommy’s band) on drums, Simon Russel on keys and vocals, and yours truly on chicken scratch and shouts.

Shows

Ok, so I have been getting a little behind on announcing shows on this blog.

So, upcoming:
  • Curtis Bumpy is at the Brick & Mortar Music Hall on Feb 18, 2012, with Afrofunk Experience. We’ll be joined by Latrice Barnett and David James will be pulling double-duty. THIS IS WHERE THE FUNK WILL BE.
  • I’ll be at the Rockit Room with another new band, ZZ Topless, on Feb 25, 2012, with Mary Redente, Peter Marietta, Jeffrey Martina, and Peter Libby.

And a couple of retroactive archives to add, as meager as my gigging schedule has been over the last few months:

  • Played at the Napa City Nights Festival on Sept 9, 2011, with a new band; tentatively named Hit Play, with Boris Dig, Ben Trumbo, Herman Eberitzsch, and Dave Powell.
  • Curtis Bumpy played the 11/11/11 party at Ag’s house.
  • Curtis Bumpy (with Omega Rae) just played at Pier 23 on Jan 29, 2012.

Curtis Bumpy shows

Playing catch up. Missed a listing for our last hit at Pier 23, which went down on June 26 2011. Was fun! We had Latrice and Jerry in the house.

Got a few more Bumpy shows lined up too:

  • July 30, 2011: Brick & Mortar (formerly CODA).  Sadly, I’ll miss this one as I’ll be on vacation.
  • August 19, 2011: Jupiter/Berkeley Music Fest.
  • October 9, 2011: Pier 23.

Stay tuned for details.

Curtis Bumpy & Omega Brooks @ CODA, 2/25/10

Curtis Bumpy will be serving up the sauce at CODA, on a rare Thursday night appearance, Feb 25 2010. Come early and get some dinner, then hang out while CB starts cookin’ at 9:00.

While Latrice works on her latest and greatest project (hint: she and her man will be bringing home a new roommate soon), we’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with the illustrious Omega Brooks on vocal stylizings. She wowed us at the last CODA show, and she’s got some new tricks up those long sleeves. See you there.

Curtis Bumpy, CODA, 1/16/2010

Curtis Bumpy starts off 2010 with some work at CODA on Saturday, Jan. 16. Hopefully, we’ll be joined for at least a song or two by the amazing Latrice Barnett, who is about to take a leave of absence for a bit. We hope she can make her way back to Bumpy sometime soon. Meanwhile, we are hoping to have a new face or two in the crowd… come on and see what we’ve got that night.

Also, just to archive the show for my own satisfaction: our previous show was also at CODA, a month ago on Dec. 19, 2009. Mr. Jackson had a previous engagement, so we once again had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Eric Garland on drums for the evening.

Curtis Bumpy, Boom Boom Room, 11/11/09

From 10/10 to 11/11. Curtis Bumpy has the pleasure of playing the after-party for the night’s screening of Still Bill, a new bio-doc about the amazing Bill Withers. We rehearsed a few of Bill’s tunes last week at the BBR show last week, and will give them a good workout for the movie crowd. Free with tickets to the movie, $7 without.
